Next River is an institute for practicing the future. We cultivate the practices, narratives, research, and connections that enable a cultural landscape of collective liberation. As an act of survival and imagination, we’re invested in the generational work of bringing an understanding of freedom— as rooted in our interconnectedness — into the popular consciousness in the United States.
Established in 2021, we have built a strong organizational foundation strategically and culturally. We are looking to bring someone in as our first Content Manager (0.5 FTE part time), to be responsible for content development and digital infrastructure management.
About the Content Manager (part-time)
This position reports to the Director of Strategic Communications and will play a vital role in supporting Next River’s mission by executing on content strategy, implementing audience growth tactics, and tracking relevant metrics to inform online engagement strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Work closely with the Director of Strategic Communications to develop and execute an online engagement strategy, prompting interaction with our ideas, narratives, and content
Manage Next River’s publishing calendar. This person will be responsible for getting content over the finish line and maintaining a consistent publishing schedule across our channels (website, newsletter, and social media)
Translate big ideas, nuanced narratives, and learnings from our programmatic work into thought-provoking content across channels
Manage Next River’s presence on LinkedIn (including posting, cross-posting, responding, etc. while helping to streamline the Executive Director’s social media posting process.
Migrate our newsletter from Mailchimp to a more interactive space, e.g., Ghost
Analyze performance across channels, gathering insights about what gets our audience excited that can be fed back into our communications strategy
Position Details
This is a part-time exempt position (0.50 FTE)
While the position is remote, we are seeking a California-based candidate
We have a strong preference for someone located in or around the San Francisco Bay Area to make in-person meetings easeful
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Next River does not provide work visa sponsorship or support (e.g., H-1B, OPT, CPT, or other employment authorization sponsorships)
Salary is $60,000 - $65,000 depending on experience, plus benefits
We’re looking for someone who has:
A passion for social justice work and a deep understanding of and fluency in intersectionality about race, gender, and class. You are committed to ending oppression and helping us get free.
3+ years experience in content management, copywriting, social media, or editorial editorial work—graphic design skills a plus.
Enthusiasm for online discussion. You’re always ready to hop into the comments or the chat to promote thoughtful engagement.
An interest in getting people excited to lean into new ways of thinking and being.
Punchy short-form writing skills. You know how to make your points clear and compelling.
A high level of skill in creating smoothly running systems. You recognize organization as an act of service.
An optimizing approach. You enjoy using data to measure progress, inform decisions, and improve strategy.
Practiced emotional intelligence. You know yourself well—your strengths and areas of growth, what you need and what your boundaries are, and what you can and can’t do. You ask for help when you need it.
A willingness to take on challenges and learn new subject matter.
A collaborative orientation. You’re comfortable sharing incomplete work, receiving and giving constructive feedback, and putting ego aside to improve the quality of the work.
Familiarity with community, newsletter and blog platforms and/or email marketing would be a plus (e.g., Ghost, Mailchimp, Squarespace, LinkedIn, Instagram).
An understanding and enthusiasm for abolition, anarchy, socialism, mutual aid, and/or cooperatives would be a plus, but is not required.
